Khurda teenager Subhasis Barik emerged champion in the 2nd Kendrapara Open Chess Tournament for Syed Umar Ali Memorial Cup, which concluded at Kendrapara today. Barik scored seven points in the eight-round tournament to receive the top prize of Rs 8,000. Top seed and FIDE Master Soumyaranjan Mishra finished runner-up to take home Rs 5,000.
Subash Engineering chairman Soubhagya Parida handed over the prizes in the presence of All-Odisha Chess Association vice-president Ranjan Kumar Mohanty, BIPL managing director Benazir Bibi, DS Law College principal Debendra Kumar Mishra and KDCA secretary Bhabesh Mohanty.
A total of 103 players from 11 districts participated in the three-day tournament, which was organised by Kendrapara District Chess Association (KDCA). Kendrapara Open, which carried a total prize fund or Rs 50,000, served as a practice event for forthcoming Fide rating tournaments (2nd IS All-India Open and 1st Berhampur All-India Open) tournaments to be held in Odisha later this month.

Dasharathi Sahoo (Khor, 6), 7. Lochan Kumar Das (Puri, 6), 8. Sanjeeban Nayak (Khor, 6), 9. Satyabrata Kar (Jajp, 6), 10. Priyabrata Samanta Singh (Khor, 5.5).
